Why your wedding business website needs SEO

I was genuinely shocked when I read this.

A recent Ahrefs survey showed that over 96% of websites get ABSOLUTELY ZERO traffic from Google.

This means that no-one is finding them organically. i.e. when people are typing queries into Google, their website isn't being offered as one the results.

Are you one of the 96%? If so, it's time to get your SEO on.

So, what exactly is SEO?

Just a quick run-down for those who aren't familiar with the term SEO. (If you know this, feel free to skip!)

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. This is where you set up your website to make it as easy as possible for Google to find, crawl and index your content. Once Google has done this, it can 'return' your website in search engine results pages (SERPs) as the answer to what people are searching for.

There are lots of things you can do to search engine optimise your site, which are a combination of on-page (the stuff your visitor sees) and back-end (things that only Google sees).

Why does my wedding business website need SEO?

If your wedding business website isn't search engine optimised, you're seriously harming your chances of being found on Google. It's the world's largest search engine by far (it has nearly 82% of the market in desktop searches), and while there's chat about AI taking over search functions, it still remains the way most people around the world look for information.

You might think that if you run paid ads then you don't need to worry about SEO. But with some stats saying that 53% of website traffic comes from organic search, compared with just 15% from paid search, you can see how important it is to make sure you're harnessing that sweet SEO power.

You might also think that social media how you're getting people to your site, but with website traffic from social media not being that high either (there are some interesting stats in this report), you spend a lot of time creating content that effectively disappears after 48 hours.

A little investment in SEO, however, means that your website will always be there, ready to answer people's queries about "documentary-style photography in Kent" or "wedding florist dried flowers", and delivering them straight to your amazing wedding business.

And even if you are part of 4% and getting some organic traffic, some SEO tweaks can make this traffic even higher.

Six things you can do today to boost your SEO

From an on-page point of view, take a look at the following.

  • Is your content E-E-A-T? This stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, and is a hugely important part of how Google assesses your website. You need to show that you know what you're talking about, that you're an expert in your field, and that people can trust what you write. Part of this is also making sure you have enough copy on pages, especially the home page. The minimum is 300 words to fulfil the E-E-A-T criteria, but research suggests 400-600 is a good range.

  • Do you have backlinks to other websites? Backlinks tell Google that your site is legit and is being cited by other websites.

  • Does your website include keywords that detail the product or service you're offering, who you're offering it to and where you're offering it? Are your blog posts answering questions that people are asking on Google?

  • Are your website pages properly structured with header tags? Best SEO practice has one H1 tag per page (think of this like the 'headline' of your page, telling Google what that page is all about), and then H2s, H3s, H4s etc used in a structural way to help subdivide your content and further help Google realise what it's all about.

  • Do your page titles and meta descriptions give accurate summaries of the content on your page and also include keywords?

  • Have you got a blog? There's a survey that found websites with a blog get 57% more visitors, 67 more leads, earn 97% more inbound links and have 434% more indexed pages than companies that don’t. Blogs are a truly amazing way to keep adding fresh content to your site (Google loves this), answer questions people are asking (Google loves this) and showcase your authority in a subject (yep, Google loves this too).
